United Nations humanitarian chief Valerie Amos approved US$15 million from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to support immediate life-saving assistance in the aftermath of the powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Nepal on 25 April 2015.

“Homes and buildings have collapsed and entire areas have been flattened. People need food, water, emergency shelter and healthcare,” said Ms. Amos. Thousands of families slept outdoors in makeshift tents for a third consecutive night as strong aftershocks continue to jolt the country.

The United Nations and its partners are scaling up operations while trying to get a comprehensive picture of the damage to address the most urgent needs. Funds from CERF will enable humanitarian partners to ramp up immediate assistance for shelter, water, logistics and health.
