OVERVIEW OF THE CRISIS
A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on 25 April at 11:56 local time creating large scale damage and many casualties. According to initial estimations and based on the latest earthquake intensity mapping, over 8 million people are affected in 39 of Nepal’s 75 districts. According to the government and as of 30 April, the earthquake caused 5,582 deaths, most of them in Sindhupalchowk, Kathmandu and Nuwakot. Over 11,175 people have been injured. These figures are expected to increase as more areas are reached and information becomes available. The Central and Western Region, including the Kathmandu Valley districts, are the worst affected.
HOW CAN BUSINESSES HELP? The Nepal Earthquake Flash Appeal has identified needs and a total requirement of US$ 415 Million, until the end of July 2015. At this stage of response efforts the most valuable and effective contributions are through cash donations to the coordinated activities in the Flash Appeal. You can access the Flash Appeal here: www.unocha.org/nepal
CONTRIBUTE TO THE NEPAL FLASH APPEAL To donate directly to the organisations in the Flash Appeal go to the links at the end of this document.
IN-KIND RELIEF AID The United Nations urges donors to make cash rather than in-kind donations, for maximum speed and flexibility, and to ensure the most appropriate aid is delivered effectively to those most in need. Companies that have employees, suppliers, customers in the region, or those with existing agreements with responding humanitarian organizations, should reach out to and provide support to these groups directly. If you can only make in-kind donations in response to disasters and emergencies, please go to https://business.un.org/en/disasters/7471 or write to pss@un.org. Please be as specific as possible in what you are donating including the time-frame for delivery and any conditions. We will then pass your offer to the most appropriate organizations. If your offer is commercial in nature, please go to www.ungm.org for more information.
REGISTERING AND RECOGNIZING YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS OCHA manages the Financial Tracking Service (FTS), which records all reported humanitarian contributions (cash, in-kind, multilateral and bilateral) to emergencies. Its aim is to give credit and visibility to donors for their generosity and to show the total amount of funding and resource gaps in humanitarian appeals. Please report your contributions to pss@un.org.
