KATHMANDU, 10th May, 2015 (WAM) -- The Khalifa Foundation has intensified its relief efforts to assist those affected by the devastating earthquake in Nepal, especially in the areas hard hit during the calamity.

The Foundaion's team distributed quantities of shelter materials, blankets, tents and food stuff to over 4,000 people in the areas affected by the quake.

An official source at the Foundation said the relief aid was dispatched following the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, to send urgent relief aid to thousands of people affected by the quake.

The official told Emirates New Agency, WAM, in a statement that the Foundation's team based in Kathmandu distributed yesterday and today the relief aid in seven villages in the north of Kathmandu, adding that the Foundation ordered a convoy of 95 trucks from India to Nepal, carrying hundreds of tons of humanitarian aid to displaced persons whose homes were destroyed in the earthquake.

In coordination with the UAE Embassy in India and the Nepalese Red Crescent, the team purchased the humanitarian aid materials from the Indian market to transported them by land to Nepal.

The Nepalese officials and those affected by the quake commended the UAE for its direct response to appeals for relief. They thanked the UAE President and the Khalifa Foundation for the humanitarian aid, noting that the relief aid alleviated the suffering and widespread devastation caused by the earthquake.
