IRAQ - Conflict
• As of 16 May, Islamic State (IS) launched a complex attack aimed at taking full control of Ramadi; heavy fighting is also reported in the areas of Fallujah and Karmah. IOM’s displacement tracking matrix monitored the displacement of more than 6,500 families.
• The Humanitarian Rapid Response Mechanism was activated, dispatching 5,000 integrated kits to Ameriyat Fallujah and Habbaniyah to serve newly displaced, stranded families. The Ministry of Displacement and Migration provided together with UNICEF partners additional food parcels, water and non-food items. UNHCR has engaged with the Rapid Response Mechanism to monitor protection concerns amongst displaced families.
PAKISTAN - Severe weather
• Heavy rain and hail affected some areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on 15-17 May, causing deaths and damage.
• Media report at least seven people killed, many other injured and several houses damaged.
• Heavy rain and thunderstorms are still expected in some areas of northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and FATA over the next 24 h.
NEPAL - Earthquakes
• Latest figures of the Nepalese Government show: 8,604 dead, 16,808 people injured, 490,000 houses destroyed and another 270,000 partially damaged.
• Over the next 24 h, rain and thunderstorms may locally affect some areas of central and eastern Nepal, including the areas affected by the earthquakes, rendering access possibly more difficult.
Guam, Northern Mariana Islands - Tropical Cyclone DOLPHIN
• DOLPHIN, after having passed Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands on 15 May, continued moving over the north-western Pacific Ocean, strengthening.
• Over the next 48 h, it is forecast to move north-east, weakening, and it may reach Ogasawara islands (Japan) on 19 May, as a Typhoon.
• As of 18 May, media reported several unroofed houses and power outages in Guam and Rota (Northern Mariana Islands).
YEMEN - Crisis
• Since 12 May a humanitarian pause has been in place. The pause has held for five consecutive days in Sana’a, the North, Central and West of the country. Large population movements have been reported of people trapped in conflict zones. People are moving out of Sa’ada, and from Aden and Taiz.
• The situation in the cities of Aden and Taiz remains dire.
• ECHO has carried out a visit to Yemen to assess the damage to houses and residential areas; assess the capacity and impact of the conflict on health facilities in Sana’a; visit IDPs in collective centres; and meet with partners active in country. There is a need to re-establish humanitarian presence in the country and scale up the response.
