Summary

International Medical Corps has been on the ground in Nepal responding to the humanitarian needs of populations affected by the earthquakes and has coordinated with the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) and the health cluster to assess needs and implement relief efforts in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Gorkha and Dhading districts. International Medical Corps’ emergency response team (ERT) includes experts working in health, shelter, nutrition, mental health/psychosocial (MHPSS) care, gender-based violence (GBV), non-food items (NFIs), and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). For the emergency response phase, the ERT is currently providing the following services: 1) primary health care and reproductive health care in hard-to-reach villages through mobile medical units (MMUs); 2) surgical support to MoHP hospitals and facilities; 3) health and hygiene education to village residents for prevention against common/communicable diseases; 4) MHPSS services in select primary health care facilities and MMUs; 5) WASH support to affected communities; 6) nutritional support to affected communities; 7) ensuring protection mechanisms are available for vulnerable populations.

Highlights

  • International Medical Corps’ ERT has provided a total of 3,153 primary health care consultations via mobile medical units (MMUs) in four districts: Bhaktapur, Kathmandu, Gorkha and Dhading.

  • International Medical Corps’ ERT has conducted hygiene promotion sessions which have reached almost 4,900 people in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Gorkha, and Lalitpur districts.

  • International Medical Corps, working in partnership with Patan Hospital in Kathmandu, is operating a field post-operative unit and is currently caring for 12 patients.

  • International Medical Corps has supported a total of 15 Psychological First Aid (PFA) trainings in Kathmandu and Dhading District.
