Pembachiri Mijar Sherpa owns the only shop available in the two wards and is also the social worker for the surrounding villages. Pembachiri was born in this village, just like his ancestors. His father had told him the story of the earthquake which happened in 1934, but he had never experienced one.
When the 1st earthquake happened on the 25th of April, he was in his shop with his granddaughter. Panicked, he went outside and started gathering people to make sure everyone was alright. All houses suffered from the earthquake and many of them were completely destroyed. In the following days, he started calling his contacts in Kathmandu and organized the purchase of tarps and food for the villages. Unfortunately, the trucks never reached their destination as the two roads to the village were both inaccessible due to landslides. His shop is slowly becoming empty and people are getting more worried every day that they will have to spend the rainy season and winter without essential items, such as clothes, hygiene items, or food. Without external assistance, those two wards will run out of all supplies in only few weeks.
ACTED teams organized a distribution of 6 tons of food (including rice, salt and lentils) in ward two and three in Lamabagar on the 24th of May. Thanks to ACTED’s food distribution that day, the two wards will be able to sustain themselves for the next few weeks, removing the pressure of food insecurity out of people’s mind, so they can concentrate on rebuilding their homes and lives. Seeing the need to clear roads from debris all around Nepal, ACTED will soon start Cash for Work activities, offering an opportunity to villagers to receive a short term income and to participate in the recovery effort of their respective villages.
