KATHMANDU – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is in the process of destroying 7.8 metric tons of spoiled rice that were identified in Gorkha.

WFP is destroying the rice after lab results from the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC) confirmed it was unfit for human consumption.

“In line with WFP procedures, the operation of destroying the food will be implemented under the supervision of district authorities and quality control inspectors of the Government of Nepal,” said WFP Country Director Pippa Bradford.

WFP’s humanitarian response to the 25 April earthquake is carried out in close partnership with the Government of Nepal. Working with authorities at the central, district and village levels and with local partners, WFP has to date reached over 2 million people with food and other assistance.

WFP works hand in hand with the government to support the ongoing recovery efforts, and ultimately to assist in the construction of a stronger and more prosperous Nepal.
