Exactly two months after the big earthquake in Nepal, the different kinds of help have developed: catastrophe help is becoming projects in the field of development cooperation. humedica had been on-site very quickly after the quake with medical field units and had been able to help practically. humedica is also going to accompany the victims in Nepal during the next months: The focus lies on family sponsorships and reconstruction.
According to official numbers, 7,900 fatalities have been recovered up to this day. The number of injured persons is still unknown. Experts estimate that 90 percent of the buildings outside the capital Kathmandu have significantly been destroyed. The consequences of this earthquake are enormous and, after all, Nepal is not able to compensate for them alone, being one of the twenty poorest countries in the world.
“It is our aim to evolve our catastrophe help into other forms of practical, need-orientated help", explains Steffa Waffenschmidt, who is the humedica responsible for the project. “Correspondingly, we are going to concentrate on helping the people with reconstruction for the coming weeks and months.”
Moreover, humedica has already initiated a family sponsorship program in villages situated within a radius of about 50 km around Kathmandu and which had been especially hit by the quake. In collaboration with the administration and the local partner organization NCM Nepal, families will systematically be supported during the next years.
“Family sponsorships are regarded as the best form of help, as it is the most effective one”, confirms humedica managing director, Wolfgang Groß. “We will offer the supported families the chance to start anew, in order to be able to stand on their own feet again.”
