Nepal: Taplejung landslides claim seven people, four more missing

At least seven persons belonging to two families were killed and four others went missing in a landslide that hit a remote village of Thukimba-6 of Taplejung district Wednesday night.

The victims have been identified as Salman Siwa, 40, his wife Manamaya Siwa, 36, their sons Nasiram Siwa and Khagendra Siwa including Naina Siwa, 10, daughter of Tejman Siwa. Two people who were also killed in the incident are yet to be identified. The bodies of the victims were recovered from a huge pile of debris.

The landslide that hit the village at midnight had swept away the houses belonging to Asta Bahadur Siwa, Salman Siwa and Tejman Siwa in Thukimba-6.

Reports quoted police as saying that a rescue team comprising Nepal Army and Armed Police Force personnel dispatched from the district headquarters has intensified search for the four unidentified people who have gone missing in the incident. Locals are also actively helping in the rescue efforts.

The village is situated at a day’s walk from Taplejung’s district headquarters.

Further details about the incident is awaited, District Police Office, Taplejung said.

Meanwhile, the landslides have also caused havoc in many parts of the districts. Reports coming in say that landslides triggered by incessant rainfall has either destroyed or swept away many houses in Thukimba-4 and Nalbu-5, displacing dozens of families and injuring many more. nepalnews.com
