• An earthquake of magnitude 6.7 M and depth 55 km occurred in the State of Manipur, north-eastern India, on 3 January, 23.05 UTC. The epicentre was located 28 km west of the State's largest city, Imphal (population approx. 270,000). USGS PAGER estimated that nearly 500,000 people were exposed to Very Strong and 1.8 million to Strong shaking.

• As of 4 January, eight people have died in India and over 100 have been injured throughout Manipur, according to media. Reports also mention buildings have either collapsed or been damaged in Tamenglong and Imphal, while electricity outages were experienced throughout the State. Indian authorities report two teams of 45 people each were sent to Imphal for relief and rescue and one team to Silchar (headquarters of Cachar district, Assam).

• In Bangladesh, five people have died in the capital of Dhaka and in the districts of Jamalpur, Rajshahi, Lalmonirhat and Panchagarh due to panic, and over 70 have been injured.

• The earthquake was felt throughout north-east India and in the States of West Bengal and Jharkand, as well as in the neighbouring countries of Myanmar/Burma, Bangladesh, Bhutan, eastern Nepal and south-eastern Tibet Autonomous Region (China).
