Highlights
Almost one year after the devastating 25 April earthquake, WFP continues to focus on the food security of vulnerable, earthquake-affected populations while making efforts to strengthen preparedness for future disasters.
A three-year relief and recovery project serving these populations is in the targeting stage. Projected requirements of USD 63 million over three years are currently five percent funded.
WFP is working closely with the Government of Nepal and humanitarian partners in the preparation of its Post-Disaster Recovery Framework.
Operational Updates
In early February, WFP completed its three-phase emergency operation serving earthquake-affected populations. The operation served over 2 million people with food support, providing over 20,000 metric tons of food and USD 6,467,880 in cash support. WFP’s support to these populations will continue into 2018, aiming to serve vulnerable communities with their long-term food security and livelihoods.
WFP is contributing to the Government of Nepal’s Post-Disaster Recovery Framework (PDRF), which will inform the planning, financing and implementation of recovery and reconstruction one year after the earthquake. Six WFP experts are contributing to eight sectoral groups: Housing and Settlements (Rural), Community Infrastructure; Housing and Settlements (Urban); Transport, Access, and Communications; Health and Nutrition; Tourism; Agriculture & Irrigation; Employment and Livelihoods; and Disaster Risk Management.
A drought in the isolated Karnali zone of northwestern Nepal has led the Government to approach WFP for assistance. In response to this request, WFP held an informal donor information meeting, to get a clearer understanding of donor funding capacity. It has been assured that the Government will take the lead in this response, with WFP to provide either a technical advisory or support role in the coming months. Discussions are ongoing as to how WFP can assist.
