The pre-monsoon has been active across Nepal, particularly in the far west, west and central regions due to the weakening effect of El Nino. Heavy rain has already triggered landslides and floods killing 12 people and six missing in far west and western regions.
Due to expected flooding in the Tarai districts and the increased risks of flash floods and landslides in the 2015 earthquake-affected districts, the UNOCHA and the UN Resident Coordinators Office have updated the Emergency Preparedness Plan (ERP) for the monsoon. This includes a consolidation of critical mapping and baseline data required for any immediate response, operational planning and stockpiling. The Nepal Emergency Response Plan is based on a scenario of 5 million people affected, with 1 500 casualties, 266 690 households displaced in Tarai region and 149 609 households displaced in the 2015 earthquake-affected region.
ECHO Kathmandu office has also been working on contingency planning and has prepared an initial deployment plan.
