For the first time in the District Administration Office in Kailali, an Early Warning System (EWS) for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) has been installed in the form of an EWS display board that generates automated data about the status of water levels in the Karnali and Mohana rivers.
The display board provides the water levels of the Karnali and Mohana rivers on a regular and ongoing basis to inform the people through a siren if the water level reaches dangerous levels. This warning will provide flood-affected communities enough advance warning to be able to move to safer areas during floods and emergency situations.
The Karnali and Mohana rivers in the Far-Western region of Nepal cause massive destruction of lives, livelihoods and resources every year. The EWS display board installed on the premises of the District Emergency Operation Center can send alert messages to the flood-affected people and the stakeholders at the same time. The center has assigned two trained people from the Nepal Police to assist and operate the EWS 24 hours a day.
Chief District Officer Mr. Bed Prakash Lekhak from the District Administration Office and Country Director Mr. Sanjay Karki of Mercy Corps Nepal jointly inaugurated the newly installed EWS display board on 17th September 2013.
