Highlights

  • WFP concluded a formal agreement with the Government of Nepal’s Department of Education. The agreement is the first of its kind wherein WFP will provide technical assistance and support to the design, formulation and implementation of the cash- based school meal programme. WFP will further extend its coverage to include two additional districts.

  • The follow-up operation for the earthquake has been finalized by the Government and aims to begin registration in Nuwakot, Dhading, and Gorkha in mid September.

Operational Updates

  • The Immediate Response Emergency Operation (IREMOP 200983) for the drought-afflicted in the Karnali districts that began on June 2016 ended in August 2016. WFP provided supplementary feeding to pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children aged 6 – 23 months in Mugu and Jumla. A follow-on operation will cover five districts in Karnali and Bajura from September 2016 to January 2017.

  • The VAM unit supported the Government in holding 74 district food security network meetings in July and August and conduct an updated Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC Acute) analytical exercise. The initial results and map were released in August.

  • The School Meals Modality Pilot Study will be implemented in two districts, Sindhupalchowk and Baridya, as part of the Department of Education’s cash-based school meals intervention. Phase I includes the construction of kitchens, latrines, water systems, and energy-saving ovens.

  • The Namaste WFP feedback mechanism will be piloted in school meals projects in Dailkeh, one of the ten districts in the Far West and Mid-Western region where WFP operates.

  • The PRRO 200787 supporting refugees swapped Super Cereal with rice in July, thus maintaining the 2,100 kcal while reducing the cost of the food basket. The supplementary feeding programme distributing Super Cereal to pregnant women and nursing mothers and people living with HIV and tuberculosis patients was halted. With these changes, the food pipeline is covered until the end of January 2017.

  • For the PRRO 200875, community registration is scheduled to commence in September in the three targeted districts of Nuwakot, Dhading and Gorkha. These districts have been severely affected by the earthquake and are mostly food-insecure. Assistance will be provided through a combination of food-for-assets and cash-for-assets activities in collaboration with the Government.

  • The concept note for Emergency Preparedness is nearing finalization, with a new Special Operation set to be launched at the end of October.
