1. Who are we?

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) first established a Country Office in Nepal in 1965 and since then has been maintaining its presence through regional representation or through a Country Office as circumstances have required, providing support to Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) programmes and capacity building. The present Country Office was established in 2003 and currently comprises of two delegates and eight national staff undertaking the following functions: management/ representation, Flagship 4 Coordination within Nepal Risk Reduction Consortium, shelter, admin/liaison and finance. This is supplemented by colleagues in the South Asia regional office in Delhi, India and the Asia Pacific Zone office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in a range of other technical areas such as disaster management and risk reduction, health and care and organizational development.

2. Who are our stakeholders?

Red Cross Movement

The primary stakeholders of IFRC in Nepal are NRCS and the people it serves through its humanitarian programmes. Currently present in Nepal there are six (6) delegates and six (6) national staff of several integrated Partner National Societies (Belgian-Flanders, British, Danish, Japanese and Norwegian Red Cross), as well as a local staff of Swiss Red Cross and external support from a number of other National Societies (see table below), which are supported by the IFRC Country Office through information sharing, coordination and administrative / logistical support when needed.

The ICRC also has a presence in Nepal and their activities are largely linked to the post-conflict humanitarian situation, including support for families of the missing, mine risk education, rehabilitation for those wounded in the conflict, emergency preparedness (such as dead body management, restoring family links and developing NRCS Rapid Action Teams) and the promotion of respect for International Humanitarian Law.
