Highlights
The WFP Country Programme platform was used to support the Karnali drought response by utilising the existing food pipeline to expand activities to include a blanket supplementary feeding programme to prevent acute malnutrition. The CERF funding has now concluded and food distributions are complete.
Registration of beneficiaries from three earthquake affected districts is completed in SCOPE, WFP’s digital beneficiary and transfer management system, and asset creation under food assistance for assets (FFA) and cash-based assistance for assets (CFA) are underway.
Operational Updates
Earthquake affected populations in Gorkha, Nuwakot and Dhading have been registered in SCOPE and have begun work on community asset creation. Food and cash distributions will commence in March.
WFP livelihood and asset creation projects have delivered technical skills trainings reaching 2,550 participants, from 7 Village Development Committees (VDCs) in Doti. The trainings included masonry, disaster risk reduction (DRR) awareness and women’s leadership against violence against women.
WFP continues to focus on rural access to support food security and resilience. With the extension of SO 200848 until the end of 2017, further trail improvements and strengthening are planned. This month 100 km of trails were assessed in Dhading District and two trails (36km) were completed in Sindhupalchok District. The United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) provided forklift trainings which took place in the middle of January; these will be certified by the Department of Transport, Nepal.
The United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) provided GBP 1.5 million for trail improvement and assessment in October 2016. Work has commenced on 30km of trails in Gorkha, with a further 100km to commence in February 2017. In addition, 158km of trail will be assessed in Gorkha and Dhading during April and May 2017.
WFP participated in a USAID mission for the formative assessment of the US Government’s Let Girls Learn Initiative in Nepal. Field visits to some of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)/WFP supported schools are expected to take place in Q1 2017.
