ADRA’s Good Governance and Livelihood (GOAL) Project is working with vulnerable groups and communities to enhance climate change resilience in three rural districts of Nepal. In a country with a significant reliance on the land for food and income, the project takes a grassroots approach to development. ADRA is providing micro-enterprise and entrepreneurship training and support, strengthening local leadership and helping communities develop environmental planning and management systems. This project works with the vulnerable groups and communities in the Rolpa, Dhading and Pyuthan districts, focusing on improving livelihoods through strengthened local leadership, environmental management strategies and income generation options.
More than 40,000 people are benefiting from this project through increased household incomes, stronger communities that offer guidance and support, and improved community resilience to changing climates and natural disasters. With ADRA’s training and support, communities undertake ‘challenge projects’ that allow them to plan and implement a development activity they see as a priority. They practise the skills and processes they need to make it a reality before continuing on with new skills and confidence.
Project activities include: providing women, men, the disabled and elderly with a nine-month entrepreneurial agriculture training course; leadership and governance training to strengthen community organisations; climate change, disaster risk reduction and renewable energy technology programs for schools, cooperatives and communities; and establishing community groups to manage disaster planning and response.
This project is led by ADRA Australia and is funded through Australian Aid from the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP).In 2015-16 through the ANCP, Australian Aid supported 5 NGOs to deliver 9 projects in 6 countries focusing on the environment and Climate Change.
