Typhoon Haiyan Response
Typhoon Haiyan destroyed or damaged an estimated 1 million homes across the Eastern and Western Visayas Regions of the central Philippines. One hundred days on from the devastating storm, the most pressing needs in the affected areas are for durable shelter and the restoration of livelihoods.
Since the previous OCHA Regional CwC Update in October 2013, the Philippines was hit by three damaging emergencies, each of these requiring a different approach to CwC. Zamboanga Conflict and Bohol Earthquake will be addressed in the March edition. This edition is focused on Typhoon Haiyan.
Several factors had contributed to the success of Philippines CwC response to Typhoon Haiyan; one of these was resourcing. Surge staff were deployed almost immediately resulting in strong coordination and engagement of local partners in the humanitarian system.
Through CwC coordination services, a structure was set-up within days that helped humanitarian actors establish an emergency radio station and conduct a series of community consultations (collaborating with the AAP interagency lead).
With a strong commitment to advocacy, radio and print programming - community voices are being heard (including different community segments such as the indigenous people).
