Nepal: Cold snap claims nine lives in a day

At least nine people have died in cold weather related incidents in the Terai belt of Nepal in the past 24 hours.

The nine person, most of them minors and senior citizens, died due to bitter cold wave accompanied by dipping mercury level in various parts of the country on Monday.

Police identified the deceased as four-year-old Sony Kora (Kapilvastu), 55-year old Chandrakala Mahato (Mahottari), 67-year-old Ibsan Ali (Rupandehi), 60-year-old Fatteh Mohammad and two-year-old Asmita Kapar (Siraha).

Police said officials are yet to identify a man (in his 60s) who died due to cold in Siraha.

Similarly, Khemraj Subedi, 40, of Dhaijan VDC in Jhapa district, died of cold on Monday, said the police. He had slept in front of houseyard after consuming alcohol, local reports said quoting police.

Meanwhile, two people have died due to bitter cold in Saptari on Monday as normal life in the eastern Terai region is adversely affected by chilly snap and thick fog for the past few weeks.

The latest victims of the cold snap Khag Khatwe, 52, of Piprapurba VDC-4 and Khikaridevi Sada, 65, of Kalyanpur VDC of the district, reports said. They were found dead at their homes Monday morning.

With this, the number of people who have died due to bitter cold wave in the district has reached 9.
