A 100-year-old woman and eight others have died due to cold in various parts of the Terai, on Thursday.
Local police reports said centenarian Bansrajo Kewat shivered to death in Rupandehi on Thursday morning.
In Rautahat, the chill claimed the lives of 75-year-old Batahi Devi, 70-year-old Jakiya Khatun, 75-year-old Dula Sahani and 8-year-old Shilakumari Baitha.
In Saptari, Saraswati Sada (45), Jalekha Khatun (35), Kusmawati Saha (65) died due to cold, police said. In Siraha, police attributed the death of Rajlala Mochi (70) to the severe cold.
Official figures show that more than four dozen people have died in Nepal's southern planes this winter due to severe cold. The government has announced that it has directed local officials to provide fire wood to locals and one blanket a piece to each family, worst affected by the cold.
