On 5 August 2014, two experts from ICIMOD joined other teams from the Disaster Preparedness Network-Nepal (DPNET) to conduct a one day field visit to the landslide dam site at Jure for rapid assessment of the landslide, landslide dam, and the newly formed lake. During the field visit, photographs of the landslide, debris flow fan, dam, lakes, and severely affected areas were taken. Local people were consulted and interviewed, and discussion was held with the Local Development Officer and Assistant Chief District Officer, Sindhupalchowk District, who are responsible for coordinating rescue and relief operations. These information sources were used together with satellite imagery in the situation analysis. Mapping and field measurements of the landslide, dam, and debris flow were not possible partly because of inaccessibility, the remaining risk of further landslide, and instability of the materials deposited and partly because of ongoing search operations and controlled explosions along the dam.
