8 QUESTIONS FOR KEITH SWALLOW, TEAM LEADER, DEVON AND SOMERSET FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE

1 . How did you get involved with this training programme?

A work colleague was coming to Nepal and needed a professional trainer for the programme. I have over 30 years of experience in Fire and Rescue Service and am a qualified trainer in Fire Service. All involved in this programme are very passionate about the Fire Service and believe that having an established Fire Service is integral to overall emergency preparedness. We have taken some leave from work in the UK, and have volunteered to come here to deliver this training programme.

2 . Why are fire services important for overall emergency preparedness? What is stopping Nepal from creating a strong fire service?

Fire Service is important because it is the first line of response in an emergency situation. A strong Fire Service, such as in the UK, will have mobilisation and communications procedures in place, equipment such as breathing apparatus ready to use, and a defined rank structure with officers having knowledge of command and control and interagency working. A Fire Service with these components is crucial for effective emergency response.
