The Mahakali river flooded with incessant rainfall for the last two weeks has started eroding the embankments in Kanchanpur district of the far west.

The embankment in Bhujela area of Bhimdutta Municipality-11 is being constructed under the People's Embankment Program, locals said.

The People's Embankment Office, Kanchanpur, received the responsibility of constructing the embankment last year.

Meanwhile, the locals are worried after the river has started eroding land towards the human settlement areas.

“Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police personnel have been constructing the embankment after the rainwater coming from Chure area eroded the embankment constructed to block Makhakali river water,” said Rajendra Prasad Chaudhary, chief of the police at the Kanchanpur district police office.

As many as 24 households were displaced after the Mahakali river eroded the land at the area and swept away their houses including Janajagriti Lower Secondary School in Kanchanpur.
